Global warming endangers our environment because of the emission of carbon dioxide. For this reason in September 2015 the Paris Convention took place, where 195 countries were participating. Its aim was to determine for all business sectors – energy, industry, construction, transportation, agriculture – the common aim to reach greenhouse gas neutrality until the year 2050. The intention is to reduce the CO2 emissions by 80% compared to 1990. In the medium term meaning until 2030 the CO2 emissions are supposed to be reduced by 55% compared to 1990. Especially the transportation sector pursues the goal to reduce its CO2 emissions until 2030 by 40-42% compared to the level of 1990.
As a consequence of the Paris Convention change within the automotive industry towards alternative drive technologies takes place. The industrial focus shifts away from conventional combustion engines towards electric mobility. According to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety the number of electric vehicles will increase until 2020 from 54000 up to 1 million and until 2030 up to 6 million vehicles. However main criticism states that there is a lack of an implementation plan for these specific objectives.
breuckmann eMobility supports a sustainable development on two levels.
On the one hand by producing high quality rotors for electric motors enabling eMobility in general. An efficient electric engine saves within a few weeks or no later than months as much as energy as would be necessary for generating additional alternative active materials. On the other hand by our decision to produce asynchronous instead of synchronous motor types leading the production of electric vehicles to be more sustainable. An aspect, which is not considered properly within the automotive industry for now.
Danger – Synchronous Motor Types
Currently the automotive industry mainly uses permanent magnet synchronous motors for electric vehicles because of their high efficiency. The result is that the electric car is sustainable, but the production of the electric engine is not.
Use of Rare Earths
Permanent magnet synchronous motors contain rotors, which are made from rare earth materials such as Neodym and Dysprosium. These chemical elements are mainly mined in China under bad working conditions.
Moreover the use of rare earths results in vast environmental impacts, as these materials have to be separated from other minerals with great efforts. During this process residues occur in form of acids or even radioactive materials, which get back into our environmental cycle carried by the groundwater leading to long-term consequences.
At the moment recycling of the rare earths is quite problematic, since there does not exist a standardized technology for the recycling process. This is the reason why recycling of rare earths is really costy and mostly unusual within the industry.
Finally there is to say that China owns 80% shares of rare earths within the world market leading to a price explosion of resources. The positive part of this dependance is the fact that a change in thinking towards more sustainable directions is unavoidable.
To support this development away from the use of rare earths, breuckmann eMobility participates together with Jaguar Land Rover, Motor Design LTD and ten other companies within the ReFreeDrive project. As a team we are working on cost-effective, sustainable solutions for the series production of highly efficient electric motors for the automotive industry without the need for rare earths. The copper rotor we specialize on is one of the solutions for asynchronous motor types that the project is researching.
Chance – Asynchronous Motor Types
Asynchronous motor types do not require the use of rare earths. Sustainability means to breuckmann eMoibility that our production is free from rare earths. Quite the contrary, our product is 100% recyclable after its product life cycle reached its end. Subsequently the recycled materials get back into the cycle of materials. For example our copper rotors consist of copper and iron, which are easily separable. Hence there is no waste created after the rotor has reached its maximum operating life. Moreover it is a coveted source of raw materials.

We live the term eMobility!
eMobility is all over our company. All founders drive to work with hybrid or fully electronically driven cars. When they arrive at the company, they charge the batteries of their cars at charging stations, which were specially built for this purpose.
The senior executive of our holding company Breuckmann GmbH & Co. KG serves as a role model to all. Volker Breuckmann proves himself as a real athlete riding his ebike regardless of all kinds of weather everyday to work. He did not hide his enthusiasm from his employees, so he introduced in June 2017 the project JobRad (job bike) supporting the spread of ebikes within the company. This was accepted very well by the staff. Today more than 10% of all employees get to work with their ebikes. At the company there do exist enough parking lots and charging stations for the bikes.
In 2015 the holding company Breuckmann GmbH & Co. KG installed a photovoltaic system on the roof of the production hall. At some days we can even reach for a few minutes peak performances up to 150 kW. On cloudless, non-operative weekends during the summer, we are able to directly conduct the electricity back into our network. The digital information board in front of the company entrance provides us with information about the current performance of the photovoltaic system.
Our climate system functions with geothermal drilling. During the winter we use it to heat our company facilities and in the summer we are able to use it to cool down our building. When the temperature outside decreases, we send cold water down through pipes where a recuperator uses the geothermal energy to heat it up again. This process is mechanical supported by a compressor. In the summer we use the pipe system the other way around to realize the cooling process.
Minimum Waste Policy
breuckmann eMobility implemented a minimum waste policy to cause as less waste as possible. Not only within our production process we treat resources carefully, as all materials go back into the cycle of materials after their operating life. Furthermore during our business activities we minimize the usage of paper as well as the waste of electricity.
